Collections

The collections constitute the very core of the War Heritage Institute. They make the past tangible, sometimes with gold, silver and fine china, sometimes with dirty felt and holey clothes, which literally tell the story of times past. These tens of thousands of objects often give their owners a face. From the moustachioed gentlemen in the Historic Gallery to the veterans' decorations: the collection items turn the soldiers into real-live people made of flesh and blood.

Behind the scenes and sometimes in front of the public a lot of efforts are made to manage, preserve and display the collections. However, collecting is a never-ending story! Hundreds of new objects arrive each year, and museum staff members all give them a place either in the showcases or in one of the many internal and external storage facilities. A medal is easy to put away in a drawer, but what about a tank? Our staff do their utmost to find an optimal solution for all objects.
