Project ’14-’18 Gallery
Support history! By funding our project account managed by the King Baudouin Foundation you contribute to the renewal of our display cases dedicated to ’14-’18! These are an essential part of the collection for the many schools and other visitors exploring the Military Museum.
Our goal: to enhance the exceptional Military Museum collections relating to the First World War (1914-1918)!
Due to a lack of financial resources the exhibition dedicated to the First World War currently mainly uses the original display cases from the 1930s. They may well be set up in two beautiful galleries typical of late 19th century metal constructions, but do not really show the collection’s full potential.
How can I contribute?

This major project, launched in 2020, aims to replace these old display cases with more modern ones, making it possible to exhibit more collection items in much better conservation conditions!
Three display cases have been created to date:
- Introduction to the conflict: armies present on the Western Front during the summer of 1914;
- A technical display case: machineguns during the war;
- Central and Eastern Europe: Russian Empire, Serbia, Bulgaria, Austro-Hungarian Empire and Ottoman Empire.
By donating to the Military Museum you contribute to the complete refurbishment of the museology in these areas! New display cases, lighting adapted to the exhibits, mannequins more in line with current museum regulations, prints and iconography to illustrate the various topics, screens and high-tech equipment for better accessibility, etc.
The King Baudouin Foundation participates in the project! Donations of 40 € per year or more to the Foundation benefit from a 45% tax reduction on the amount actually paid, excluding all other formulas.
An incredible collection!
To fill these display cases and tell visitors the story of the First World War the Museum can fall back on innumerable both priceless and world-class objects! The ensemble was constituted as of 1916 by the first curator, Mr Louis Leconte, and has been expanded over time, by the military itself, through various acquisitions and thanks to numerous donations (from private individuals, but also from many countries).
Thanks to this collection work started more than a century ago the Military Museum, located in the very heart of Europe, not far from the ‘European district’, can exhibit uniforms and weapons from almost all belligerent countries!
